Light & Wonder's digital split puts SciPlay's new CEO to the test

Real-money iGaming revenue is rising while the group's social casino business contracts. Matthieu Labbat arrives with relevant mobile gaming experience, but better payment economics can only do part of the recovery work.

Light & Wonder reported sharply different results from its digital businesses on 4 November. Third-quarter iGaming revenue rose 13% to $97m, while SciPlay revenue fell 12% to $173m. 1 On the same day, the company appointed Matthieu Labbat as SciPlay's chief executive, effective immediately. 7

The contrast gives his appointment a clear commercial context. Casino content can be growing in one part of a group while another business built around similar imagery struggles to retain paying customers. A successful slot franchise provides useful intellectual property; the way people encounter and pay for it still determines the business around it.

Similar Games, Different Commercial Relationships

SciPlay's social casino games offer virtual coins and optional purchases. Those coins cannot be redeemed for cash. Its portfolio includes Jackpot Party Casino and Quick Hit Slots. Light & Wonder's iGaming division, meanwhile, supplies content and technology to online casino operators. 2

That changes the job each business has to do. An iGaming supplier needs games operators want to distribute and players want to choose. A social game publisher also has to maintain the app's wider experience: its events, progression, virtual economy and reasons to return. Familiar slot themes can attract attention, but the surrounding mobile game must sustain that relationship.

Light & Wonder attributes iGaming's growth to North American momentum, its own content and an expanding partner network. Its presentation also shows the cost of expansion: the segment's margin moderated, reflecting revenue mix and investment. 3 For British readers, there is a further qualification. The quarterly filing identifies higher UK gambling duties as a drag on iGaming growth. 2

Growing revenue therefore does not make this side of the business effortless. Equally, the opposing growth rates do not establish that SciPlay's customers have moved into Light & Wonder's real-money games. The results contain no customer migration analysis connecting the two.

From a Stock Market Float to Full Ownership

SciPlay completed its initial public offering on 7 May 2019, when its parent was still called Scientific Games. The transaction sold a minority interest in the social gaming business. 4

The direction reversed on 23 October 2023. Light & Wonder completed the purchase of the approximately 17% of SciPlay it did not already own, paying $22.95 per share. SciPlay became wholly owned and its shares ceased public trading. Management's stated rationale included closer collaboration and deploying games across digital and land-based platforms. 5

There is a sensible production argument behind that strategy. An established character or game concept can give developers a starting point, while shared knowledge can inform another version. Ownership makes collaboration easier to organise. It cannot guarantee that an audience will respond equally well across different formats.

SciPlay's own history also argues against treating decline as inevitable. In the third quarter of 2024, it reported 5% revenue growth, citing several established titles, including Quick Hit Slots and Jackpot Party Casino. 6 Those franchises could still support growth after the acquisition. The question now is how much renewal the games and their surrounding experiences need.

Direct Sales Help Earnings, But Leave a Demand Problem

SciPlay's direct-to-consumer revenue rose to $53m from $40m a year earlier, reaching 31% of quarterly revenue. 1 The company's earlier filings explain the attraction: its proprietary payment platform, launched in 2023, was intended to reduce processing and related costs compared with third-party platform fees. 6

That can improve the economics of an existing purchase. It does not, by itself, establish that another player has joined or that an existing player wants to spend more. A larger direct share can reflect customers changing payment channels as well as additional demand.

The audience indicators remain difficult. Light & Wonder reported average monthly paying users of 426,000, down from 514,000, while average monthly revenue per paying user rose 5% to $132.80. 3 That improvement in revenue per payer was insufficient to compensate for the smaller reported paying base.

Management describes a mature social casino market under pressure from sweepstakes operators. 2 That is its assessment of competition, rather than evidence assigning every lost dollar to a particular rival.

The margin improvement also needs context. The filing identifies lower payroll costs and a $7m research and development tax credit benefiting the quarter's expenses, alongside higher-margin direct sales. 2 It would overstate the evidence to credit the entire improvement to the payment platform.

SciPlay's adjusted EBITDA still fell 6%, despite its higher margin. 1 Yet it remained substantially above iGaming's contribution in the table. This is a sizeable earnings business with weakening demand. Its recovery matters both for future growth and for preserving what it already contributes.

What Labbat's Experience Can Realistically Change

Labbat spent seven and a half years at Product Madness, most recently leading the business with responsibility for its profit and loss. Light & Wonder says his tenure included growth above category rates, increased direct sales and improved margins. Earlier roles at King involved product management and data science. 7 Product Madness is Aristocrat's social casino business, with titles including Lightning Link Casino and Heart of Vegas. 8

Those credentials fit the task. SciPlay needs someone who understands how mobile games evolve after launch, alongside the economics of acquiring and retaining their audiences. They provide a reason to take the appointment seriously, while leaving the outcome to be demonstrated.

Our view is that the strongest recovery would combine a more stable paying audience with convincing product renewal. Rising revenue per remaining payer may cushion the accounts, but it leaves the business exposed if that audience continues to contract. Moving purchases to a cheaper channel helps retain more value from sales; there is a limit to how much channel migration alone can achieve.

Product renewal also requires judgement about what to change. As our analysis of Evolution's game redesigns explored, additional features and development effort can produce very different commercial outcomes. SciPlay operates a different model, but faces the same underlying test: whether the changes improve the experience enough for customers to return.

The next results should therefore be read for audience stabilisation alongside revenue and margins. Sustaining earnings while funding useful improvements would strengthen the recovery case. A rising direct-sales share accompanied by further contraction in payers would leave the central problem unresolved.

Labbat inherits brands, an established payment channel and meaningful earnings. His task is to make that combination support a growing audience again. The iGaming division's progress shows the value of Light & Wonder's content, while SciPlay will have to demonstrate its own route back to growth.
