Betsson's history is a story of corporate separation followed by acquisitions that added gambling brands, local market access and technology. Its roots reach the Swedish Cherry business established in 1963, but that does not mean the present Betsson consumer website or the modern listed group's legal structure existed in 1963. Cherry invested in Betsson.com in 2003, took full ownership in 2005, and reorganised its businesses in 2006 - 07. Later Betsson acquisitions helped build an international casino and sportsbook group.
Two recent transactions show why dates and scope matter. The Belgian betFIRST purchase completed in July 2023; the acquired consumer brand was later replaced with Betsson in Belgium in 2026. A March 2026 agreement involving Rhino Entertainment closed in August, but transferred a defined Canadian B2C business and selected B2B technology - not necessarily the whole Rhino Entertainment Group. The following chronology distinguishes announcements, completions, divestments and rebrands. See the Betsson company overview for today's group identity.
Betsson Timeline - Major Corporate Milestones

Cherry Origins and the Emergence of Betsson
The company's published historical roots begin with AB Restaurang Rouletter, founded by Bill Lindwall and Rolf Lundström in 1963. The name Cherry and its cherry symbol appeared later, in 1972. This early business developed around gaming activities rather than an internet casino: the online Betsson brand belonged to a subsequent corporate phase. Treating 1963 as the launch date of betsson.com would compress several quite different businesses into one false origin story.
The parent company's B shares were listed in Stockholm on 22 June 2000, before the present name existed. Cherry's 2003 annual report describes a 10% stake in betting exchange Betsson.com. It later exercised options to acquire the remaining shares; the 2005 interim report records consolidation from 17 February 2005.
In 2005, Cherry's board planned a separation into more focused businesses. During 2006, the Cherry Casino operation was distributed to shareholders, and the listed parent changed its name from Cherryföretagen AB to Betsson AB. The software business Net Entertainment was distributed and separately listed in April 2007. The issuer's 2007 report confirms that Net Entertainment remained consolidated only through March of that year.
These demergers explain why Cherry or NetEnt connections do not prove current subsidiary status. See Betsson brands and subsidiaries for current classifications.
Building the Early European Betting Portfolio
Once the structure had narrowed around online gambling, the next phase used acquisitions to gain established names and local expertise. Betsafe entered the group through a 2011 acquisition. Nordic Gaming Group followed in 2012. These moves expanded reach beyond the Betsson flagship without requiring every market to use the same customer-facing brand.
The 2016 RaceBets acquisition added horse-racing expertise. Its then-reported locally regulated revenue does not establish where RaceBets operates today.
The 2017 NetPlay transaction added a further collection of UK-facing historical names, including SuperCasino, Jackpot247 and Vernons. Later UK consolidation shows why an acquisition list is not a reliable catalogue of currently available casinos. In October 2020, Betsson announced a sharp reduction in its UK consumer portfolio to focus on Rizk. The subsequent UK Gambling Commission record for Zecure Gaming Limited shows its remote casino licence surrendered in June 2026. These are separate events; the full licence implications require regulator-level checks, not inference from brand history.
Geographic and Platform Expansion
In 2020, Betsson acquired Gaming Innovation Group's B2C activities. That perimeter included consumer brands such as Rizk rather than the entirety of GiG's corporate and technology businesses. The deal demonstrates the recurring Betsson approach of purchasing an operating portfolio that can be integrated with its own commercial infrastructure. Describing the transaction as “Betsson bought GiG” without qualification would overstate the target.
INKAbet, acquired in 2021, expanded the group's Latin American consumer footprint, particularly in Peru. Geography was central to that logic: an established local brand may help a group serve a market differently from a uniform international launch. Yet acquisition of a consumer business does not exempt the new owner from country-specific gambling rules or automatically confer permission across the region.
Betsson's technology strategy became especially visible with Sporting Solutions. The group agreed in 2024 to buy specified trading, pricing and sports-betting risk-management operations from France's FDJ Group. Betsson's 2024 annual report records that the deal completed in December 2024. The purchase strengthened sportsbook capabilities for consumer operations and B2B clients; it was not a purchase of the FDJ Group itself.
In early 2025, Betsson completed two smaller transactions. According to its Annual Report 2025, it acquired BetClic Italy for €1.3 million on a debt-free basis and purchased the remaining shares in Bukmacherska, its previously jointly owned Polish betting company, for €5.1 million. The Polish transaction increased its interest in an existing investment rather than introducing a wholly unrelated business.
Some deals supplied local audiences; others added pricing or technology capabilities. The B2C/B2B distinction is examined in Betsson's business model.
betFIRST - Belgian Acquisition and Later Brand Changes
The Betsson betFIRST acquisition has three distinct dates or events: the original agreement, the completed purchase and the later brand migration. Mixing them produces misleading claims about both transaction value and the present Belgian brand.
betFIRST Transaction Facts
- 15 June 2023: Betsson AB announced that the group had agreed to acquire all shares in the betFIRST Group, a Belgian sports-betting and gaming operator.
- Consideration: headline transaction value €120 million, comprising €117 million upfront on a cash- and debt-free basis and up to €3 million conditional earn-out, payable in cash.
- 5 July 2023: the acquisition was completed, as Betsson subsequently stated in its July trading update.
- Q3 2026: the Belgian customer-facing betFIRST operation transitioned to the Betsson brand; this was a rebrand, not a second betFIRST acquisition.
Do not substitute a secondary €130 million headline for the issuer's betFIRST terms: the €3 million element was conditional. The later completion statement, not the announcement, establishes closing.
At the same time, Betsson and Groupe Partouche announced a strategic partnership for online casino services in regulated markets, with Belgium intended as an early market. That partnership was a separate commercial arrangement: it did not mean Betsson acquired Groupe Partouche, and the acquisition of betFIRST did not itself provide blanket permission for every online casino product. The original announcement explicitly conditioned the envisaged casino offering on obtaining the required approvals.
The subsequent identity change is equally significant. Betsson's Q3 2026 report describes a Belgian launch of the Betsson brand through a rebranding from betFIRST. Customers seeing a new trading name should not assume an entirely new share purchase or that a legal licensee vanished with the old branding. For company-to-market regulatory details, see Betsson markets and licences.
Rhino Entertainment - the Canadian B2C Acquisition
The Betsson Rhino acquisition is another case where the name of the seller is broader than the business actually purchased. On 12 March 2026, Betsson announced an agreement to acquire Rhino Entertainment Group's Canadian licensed B2C operation together with specified technology assets for B2B use. The stated target included several Rhino entities holding assets, licences, personnel and operational capabilities serving Ontario and the rest of Canada.
Rhino Transaction Facts
- Agreement: announced 12 March 2026, subject to applicable regulatory clearances.
- Purchased scope: Canadian B2C business and proprietary front-end and middleware technology for B2B operations.
- Stated price: approximately €64.5 million, including €51.25 million upfront at closing and the balance deferred for six months.
- Transaction reference multiple: approximately 4.7× EV/EBITDA using estimated pro-forma 2025 results for the target, not reported consolidated Betsson EBITDA.
- Completion: confirmed by Betsson on 3 August 2026.
The August release confirms closing, unlike the earlier expected timetable. “Acquisition of Rhino Entertainment” is shorthand, not evidence that every seller business transferred.
Why combine these two types of assets? The Canadian B2C operations offered an existing regulated consumer platform; Rhino's front-end and middleware could strengthen Betsson's service proposition to other operators. Those are distinct sources of value. Neither proves that Betsson now owns the seller's entire worldwide portfolio, nor that any particular technology benefit or forecast licensing revenue has already been realised.
The price, pro-forma valuation basis and deferred-payment structure should also remain separate from later earnings statements. A reported price of €64.5 million is not group revenue, and the €13.7 million estimate of the target's 2025 pro-forma EBITDA in the March announcement was not a full-year profit recognised by Betsson. Acquisition accounting, consolidation effects and cash flows are considered in Betsson financial results.
What Changed in Betsson's Corporate Perimeter?
Not every announced acquisition remains part of the group. Betsson announced a Dutch transaction involving Holland Gaming Technology Ltd and Holland Power Gaming B.V. on 19 February 2024, but terminated and unwound it on 2 June 2025 after the Dutch regulator had not decided by the agreed long-stop date. Betsson's Annual Report 2025 records a €24.8 million positive cash-flow effect in Q3 2025 from repayment of consideration, with no noticeable effect on the consolidated income statement. The targets must not be classified as retained acquisitions on the strength of the 2024 announcement.
Corporate histories are most useful when they show what moved into or out of the group, and what changed only in appearance. Five examples illustrate the distinctions:
| Event | Before | After | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 - 07 demergers | Cherry Casino and Net Entertainment businesses in the wider historical group | Distributed to shareholders and separately listed | That either remains a present Betsson subsidiary |
| GiG B2C, 2020 | Selected consumer businesses under GiG | Acquired consumer perimeter entered Betsson | That the entire GiG corporation was purchased |
| Dutch transaction, 2024 - 25 | Announced deal for Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming | Transaction unwound in June 2025; consideration subsequently repaid | That the targets remained completed Betsson acquisitions |
| betFIRST, 2023 - 26 | Belgian operator/brand acquired by Betsson | Betsson brand replaced betFIRST for Belgian customers in 2026 | That rebranding proves a new acquisition or licence transfer |
| Rhino, 2026 | Defined Canadian B2C businesses and selected technology in Rhino's perimeter | Assets and entities within agreed scope transferred after closing | That the entire Rhino Entertainment Group became Betsson-owned |
These cases reveal a strategy built from selective market entry and technology capabilities, not uninterrupted ownership of every historical asset. Actual legal control should be checked against dated subsidiary notes and transaction disclosures. Current investor ownership is a separate question covered in Betsson people and ownership. Integration, regulatory approvals and execution uncertainties are discussed in Betsson risks and opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Was Betsson Founded?
The corporate lineage reaches a Swedish gaming predecessor founded in 1963. The Betsson.com business was a later development; the listed parent acquired it through the Cherry structure and adopted the Betsson AB name in 2006.
Who Bought betFIRST, and When?
Betsson Group agreed to acquire all shares in the Belgian betFIRST Group in June 2023. The acquisition completed on 5 July 2023. A subsequent 2026 rebrand brought the Belgian consumer offer under the Betsson name.
Did Betsson Acquire All of Rhino Entertainment Group?
The official transaction description does not establish that. Betsson completed the purchase of Rhino's defined Canadian licensed B2C business and specified technology assets on 3 August 2026.
Does a Brand Rename Mean a New Company Was Acquired?
No. A rebrand changes the name seen by customers; a share or asset acquisition changes a legal or economic interest. The two events can occur years apart, as the betFIRST example shows.
Editorial conclusion: each Betsson milestone needs an event date, the object transferred and a verified status. The group of 2026 was shaped by historic spin-offs as well as later acquisitions - and its current perimeter should never be reconstructed by adding up every brand ever mentioned in a press release.
