DraftKings operates a US-centred sports betting and gaming business, but its availability depends on the product, territory and licensed legal entity. A sportsbook licence is not automatically an online casino licence; a registered subsidiary is not necessarily a gambling operator; and the group’s presence in Canada does not mean nationwide Canadian permission.
For British readers, the immediate answer is particularly important. DraftKings discontinued its Great Britain fantasy sports offering on 4 October 2024. Its former British Gambling Commission licensee, DK Crown Holdings Inc., surrendered its licence with effect from 7 October 2024. Neither a historic licence nor the existence of a UK-registered DraftKings group company proves that a currently authorised UK-facing DraftKings consumer product is available.
The useful question is: which entity can offer which product, under whose permission, where and when? Our DraftKings corporate profile covers the wider group.
DraftKings Markets at a Glance: Product, Entity and Permission
The following table contains selected evidence-backed examples, not a complete real-time list of every permitted product or every state in which the brand appears. Licence scope, dates and holder names matter more than a marketing count.
| Territory | Product or activity | Identified entity | Authority and evidence | Dated interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | Former fantasy sports / historic pool betting and gambling software permissions | DK Crown Holdings Inc. | UK Gambling Commission, account 42475; former licence 042475-R-321959-008 | Licence surrendered 7 October 2024; historic, not current UK consumer permission |
| Massachusetts, US | Sports wagering | Crown MA Gaming, LLC, trading as DraftKings | Massachusetts Gaming Commission, Category 3 operator listing | Five-year licence awarded 25 July 2025; state and product specific |
| New Jersey, US | Regulated gaming service enterprises | Crown NJ Gaming Inc. and other named suppliers | New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, Order 3003 (2026) | Particular CSIE licensing records; not a blanket US authorisation |
| Ontario, Canada | DraftKings Casino / Sportsbook branded sites | Crown DK CAN Ltd. | iGaming Ontario operator directory | Ontario operator identification; not a licence for every Canadian province |
| Alberta, Canada | DraftKings Sportsbook & Casino | Crown DK CAN Ltd. | AGLC iGaming Operator register and AiGC registered-site directory | Registered operator; expiry 13 July 2027 |
| Alberta, Canada | Golden Nugget Casino | GNOG CAN Ltd. | AGLC iGaming Operator register and AiGC registered-site directory | Separately registered operator; expiry 13 July 2027 |
| US event-contract market | Exchange infrastructure | Railbird Exchange LLC | US Commodity Futures Trading Commission exchange designation | Federal exchange status is not a universal state gambling permission |
A regulator record proves only its stated entity and scope, not permission for every group affiliate or product. Licence award and product launch dates can also differ.
Is DraftKings Available in the UK?
For the historic DraftKings UK consumer business, the answer is unusually clear: the company announced that its fantasy sports service would end in Great Britain on 4 October 2024. The related UKGC record for DK Crown Holdings Inc. shows licence number 042475-R-321959-008, account 42475, with the status Surrendered and an end date of 7 October 2024.
The three-day difference does not imply a contradiction. One date records the cessation of the consumer product; the other records the regulatory end of the former licence. A company can cease offering a service before its permission formally ends. The Gambling Commission itself explains that business closure and surrender dates need not coincide.
The historical licence record included pool betting and gambling software activities. Those categories must not be reinterpreted as a current British online sportsbook or casino licence. Equally, the surrender should not be described as a licence revocation. Surrender and revocation are distinct regulatory outcomes, and the official historical status here is surrender.
There was a separate UKGC regulatory action in September 2024. The regulator imposed a £28,750 financial penalty concerning self-exclusion requirements. That penalty and the later surrender are independently dated events. The available official record does not justify asserting that the penalty caused the surrender, or that it ended DraftKings’ worldwide business.
Why an Active UK Company Is Not a UK Gambling Licence
DKUK Services Ltd, Companies House number 09581593, appears as an active UK company in the underlying research. That is corporate-registration evidence. It does not establish that DKUK Services Ltd holds an active UKGC B2C permission or operates a current UK-facing gambling website. A registered office, company director, person with significant control and gambling licensee are four different legal concepts.
Likewise, historical domains listed on a UKGC record describe the former licence context. They do not prove that the global DraftKings website closed, that a different domain is authorised in Britain, or that a consumer can access a licensed product through a workaround. This article does not recommend access methods or gambling alternatives.
My assessment is that the British story illustrates a broader research trap: corporate presence should not be promoted into consumer availability. For a responsible statement about the UK, the operative documents are the current UKGC register and the specific product’s status, rather than an old SEO page describing DraftKings as a “UK sportsbook”.
DraftKings Sportsbook States in the United States
DraftKings’ issuer description dated 21 October 2026 referred to mobile and/or retail sports betting across 30 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Ontario and Alberta. This is a useful scale indicator, but its wording does substantial work. “Mobile and/or retail” does not mean that every one of those 30 US states has the same online sportsbook permission or availability.
Retail betting can depend on a casino, tribal, racetrack or other authorised location; mobile sports wagering can operate under a different approval. State rules may also distinguish operators, service providers, platform suppliers and partners. The parent company can own a brand without directly holding each local licence in its own name.
Massachusetts provides a concrete example. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission identifies Crown MA Gaming, LLC d/b/a DraftKings and records the award of a full five-year Category 3 Sports Wagering Operator Licence on 25 July 2025. That official record is much more precise than a general assertion that “DraftKings is licensed in America”. It names the applicant, product category, regulator and award date.
The regulator separately records a US$450,000 penalty and conditions over patron-account noncompliance on the same date. That is not evidence of licence revocation. See our DraftKings risks and opportunities analysis.
A static “DraftKings sportsbook states” list can be misleading even when it was accurate on its publication date. States approve, limit or alter products over time; a retail-only market may be advertised beside a mobile market; and the operating counterparty may vary. The dated issuer count is therefore presented here as a company-reported footprint, not an independent licence-by-licence certification of online access on 5 November 2026.
DraftKings Casino States: A Different Regulatory Perimeter
DraftKings Casino uses online casino or iGaming permissions, which should never be inferred simply from a sportsbook map. State sports betting laws do not grant casino gaming rights by default. An operator may have a sportsbook offering in a territory without permission to offer online slots or table games there.
New Jersey illustrates the need to inspect the legal identity behind a familiar brand. A 2026 New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement order names several DraftKings-related Casino Service Industry Enterprise licensees: Crown NJ Gaming Inc. (CSIE 465-50, vendor ID 89844), SBTech Malta Limited (471-50, 90043), SBTech US Inc. (472-50, 90046) and a Golden Nugget Online Gaming name (583-50, 93909). These are specific supplier/licensing identifiers, not interchangeable state corporate registration numbers or nationwide casino authorisations.
Order 3003 principally addresses an individual’s qualification in relation to these licensed enterprises; it is not a substitute for a current individual licence search. The order also uses Golden Nugget Online Gaming Inc., whereas older records use Golden Nugget Online Gaming LLC. Without corporate amendment records, the naming difference remains unresolved.
For any particular “DraftKings casino states” claim, the right check is a dated state regulator listing for online casino products, including the platform provider and licensed operator where the state model distinguishes them. A sports wagering licence alone does not fill that evidential gap.
DraftKings in Canada: Ontario and Alberta
Canadian availability is governed provincially, not by one universal DraftKings licence covering the country. Ontario is the clearest entity-level example in the reviewed records: the iGaming Ontario operator directory identifies Crown DK CAN Ltd. alongside DraftKings-branded gaming sites. A brand and the contracted legal operator should be recorded together.
Ontario’s framework is not equivalent to a licence for every other Canadian province. Separate requirements can apply to commercial operators and to sportsbook and online casino products. Nor does a similarly named subsidiary, such as GNOG CAN Ltd., automatically become the licensee for every Golden Nugget or DraftKings-branded Canadian site. The relevant authority record must connect the exact name to the product.
DraftKings in Alberta
Alberta is a documented second Canadian market rather than merely a place mentioned in an investor statement. On 9 July 2026, DraftKings announced that DraftKings Sportsbook, DraftKings Casino and Golden Nugget Online Gaming were scheduled to launch there on 13 July. Its subsequent help material describes DraftKings Casino as launched and identifies the sportsbook and casino introduction on that date. This supports product availability, although the date of any individual customer’s first transaction is not independently established.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) register identifies Crown DK CAN Ltd. as an iGaming operator associated with DraftKings.com and GNOG CAN Ltd. as a separately registered iGaming operator associated with goldennuggetcasino.com. Both registrations show an expiry date of 13 July 2027. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) separately lists DraftKings Sportsbook & Casino and Golden Nugget Casino as registered sites. AGLC regulates the operators; AiGC manages commercial arrangements. Neither brand's registration should be assigned to the other company.
Ontario and Alberta thus both have named provincial operator evidence. They do not, however, create a single Canadian licence or establish availability in every other province.
Which DraftKings Company Actually Holds a Licence?
DraftKings Inc. is the listed Nevada parent company, reporting to the US Securities and Exchange Commission under CIK 1883685 and trading under DKNG. Its February 2026 subsidiary exhibit names numerous operating and technology entities. Group ownership of a subsidiary does not mean the parent is itself the named licensee in every territory, and an entity on the exhibit is not automatically an active B2C operator.
The chain often comprises several different roles:
- Parent or holding company: owns economic interests and publishes consolidated accounts.
- Locally approved operator: holds or participates in the relevant sports wagering or iGaming permission.
- Technology supplier or service enterprise: provides software, pricing, payments or operations under a different authorisation category.
- Commercial or tribal partner: may hold a local market-access role without being wholly owned by DraftKings.
For instance, Crown MA Gaming, LLC is identified in the Massachusetts operator record, while Crown DK CAN Ltd. is named in Ontario’s operator directory. DK Crown Holdings Inc. is relevant to the surrendered British licence. The names are not synonyms for the parent, and their permissions are not portable across territories.
The company’s corporate perimeter includes sportsbook, iGaming, lottery courier, fantasy and specialist technology businesses. Jackpocket LLC, Simplebet LLC and Railbird entities serve different functions and do not obtain identical regulatory status merely by being within the same public group. The ownership and acquisition details are addressed separately in our DraftKings brands and subsidiaries guide.
As an editorial rule, I would record a licence under the exact legal name displayed by its authority, rather than silently replacing it with the best-known brand. That prevents two common errors: assigning a supplier’s permission to a consumer operator, and treating a company whose name contains “DraftKings” or “Crown” as licensed everywhere.
Fantasy Sports, Lottery Couriers and Predictions Follow Other Rules
Daily fantasy sports do not simply inherit sportsbook or casino status. A state may distinguish fantasy contests from conventional wagering, with separate registration, exclusion or compliance rules. The former British fantasy operation is another reminder that one product can end in a country while other corporate divisions continue elsewhere.
Lottery courier services, including those associated with Jackpocket, are not automatically casino operations. Their legality and permission depend on the relevant lottery framework and jurisdiction. A lottery distribution relationship does not authorise a brand to add sports wagering or online casino products without further evidence.
Prediction markets introduce yet another regulatory model. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission recognises the designated contract market status of Railbird Exchange. DraftKings’ customer-facing Predictions business and the DKeX exchange infrastructure have distinct roles. A federal exchange designation is evidence about that exchange’s regulatory position; it does not conclusively settle every state-law dispute about every sports-related event contract sold through a consumer interface.
These product distinctions also matter financially. Stakes, sportsbook revenue, casino revenue, contest fees and transaction-based activity cannot automatically be combined as though they were identical measures. The mechanics sit in our DraftKings business model analysis.
How to Check a DraftKings Market or Licence Claim
I use a short source hierarchy: first the primary regulator’s current register, then the actual licence or order, then the company’s dated public disclosures. A search result or affiliate availability table can be useful for finding a question, but not for proving a legal permission.
Every defensible entry needs six fields: territory, product, legal holder, authority, status and evidence date. A seventh field, licence or register identifier, should be added where the authority publishes it. If any element is missing, it should remain “not independently confirmed” rather than be inferred from a sister company.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Use DraftKings in the UK?
DraftKings’ former Great Britain fantasy sports service closed on 4 October 2024. The former British licence subsequently ended. Those facts do not establish a currently authorised UK consumer sportsbook or casino offering, and no such permission is confirmed in this research.
Does DraftKings Have a UK Gambling Commission Licence Today?
The identified licence of DK Crown Holdings Inc., account 42475, is recorded as surrendered effective 7 October 2024. A current UKGC search is the proper final check for any other specifically named operator; registration of DKUK Services Ltd is not itself a gambling licence.
Are DraftKings Casino and Sportsbook Offered in the Same US States?
Not necessarily. Sportsbook and online casino products require distinct approvals. A combined DraftKings market count cannot be used as an online casino state list.
Does DraftKings Operating in Canada Mean Every Province Is Covered?
No. Ontario identifies Crown DK CAN Ltd., and Alberta registers it for DraftKings products while separately registering GNOG CAN Ltd. for Golden Nugget Casino. These are product- and province-specific records, not nationwide permission.
My Assessment: Licensing Is a Map, Not a Single Badge
DraftKings’ geographic breadth is commercially significant, but it is easy to exaggerate by counting brands or registered entities instead of actual product permissions. Its Massachusetts operator licence, Ontario directory entry and surrendered British record answer different questions. In my view, the strongest assessment of regulatory scale is one that identifies who operates, what they may offer, where and as of when. Anything broader risks turning a corporate map into a misleading consumer availability claim.
Independent corporate research for UK readers, based on dated issuer disclosures and named regulator records. Not gambling access advice or a guarantee that a product is available at any particular address.
