Genius Sports supplies official sports data, streaming-related services and technology to betting companies, broadcasters and other commercial partners. Its best-known agreements include the NFL and Football DataCo, but these arrangements do not make Genius the owner of those competitions or of the bookmakers using its products. Equally, its British gambling software licence is not a licence to accept bets from UK consumers.
Three distinctions explain the business: the sports organisation controls the underlying rights; Genius receives specified contractual distribution or technology rights; and the customer operates its own consumer-facing service under the permissions applicable to that activity and territory. Terms such as exclusive, official and worldwide describe particular contractual scopes, not ownership of every related data point, broadcast or gambling activity. This article maps those scopes using dated disclosures. For corporate background, see our Genius Sports company overview.
What rights does Genius Sports actually hold?
A league may grant distribution rights while retaining its competitions and other commercial rights. A sportsbook can buy a feed without owning its source data or becoming a Genius subsidiary.
| Relationship | Relevant party | Verified subject | Contractual or regulatory limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFL rights agreement | NFL → Genius Sports | Official play-by-play data, Next Gen Stats, designated watch-and-bet and advertising rights | Extended through the 2029 NFL season; media, betting, video and advertising rights have different scopes |
| UK football rights agreement | Football DataCo → Genius Sports | Exclusive official live betting data, including designated Player Market Data | Premier League, EFL and SPFL; 2025/26 to 2028/29 seasons under the 2024 extension |
| Business-to-business supply | Genius Sports → sportsbooks/media clients | Data feeds, streaming access where permitted, software, integrity and media services | Customer's contract, product and local licensing requirements determine use |
| UK software permission | UK Gambling Commission → Genius Sports UK Limited | Remote Gambling Software operating licence | British licensed software activity; not a remote betting or casino operator permission |
| Prediction-market distribution | Genius Sports → Kalshi/Polymarket | Specified official data, media, streaming or integrity services | Separate US-focused announcements in August 2026; platform permissions remain distinct |

Data, video, broadcast and software are different rights
An official data feed reports authorised match events and statistics. Player Market Data supports markets linked to individual players' actions. Streaming rights permit specified moving-image content to be delivered to defined customers or audiences; they are not automatically equivalent to unrestricted television broadcast rights. Tracking technology may be installed or operated for clubs and broadcasters under its own arrangements. A gambling software licence concerns a regulated supplier's activities, not the ownership or geographical breadth of a sports-data contract.
Exclusive distribution of an official feed is not exclusivity over all information about a match. Public announcements omit many sublicensing, pricing and termination provisions; those undisclosed details remain unknown.
NFL deal: official data, products and term
The Genius Sports NFL deal began as a strategic partnership announced in 2021, was extended in 2023 and was expanded again in 2025. The most recent public extension is the relevant starting point when evaluating its current term: Genius Sports and the NFL said it will run through the end of the 2029 NFL season. Referring only to the earlier 2027 to 28 period would therefore be outdated.
The 2025 announcement identifies several distinct categories:
| Product or right | Genius's announced role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Official NFL play-by-play and betting data | Exclusive distributor of the league's real-time official data and betting feed | Distributed to betting operators and media businesses in the stated global markets; operator use remains jurisdiction-dependent |
| Next Gen Stats (NGS) | Distributor of the NFL's proprietary advanced statistics | Statistical access does not confer ownership of the NFL or its games |
| Watch-and-bet live games | Sole supplier of official low-latency NFL watch-and-bet content to sportsbooks internationally | This description should not be expanded into all US broadcast or mobile streaming rights |
| BetVision | Genius-powered interactive, low-latency viewing product associated with the NFL partnership | Availability and viewing entitlements depend on the applicable distribution arrangements |
| Digital advertising | Exclusive in-game inventory representation within the specified arrangement, plus designated NFL digital and betting advertising inventory | Advertising representation differs from data distribution and from ownership of the NFL's entire ad inventory |
| Integrity and technology cooperation | NFL-related data and technology services; integrity monitoring is part of the historical partnership | Service obligations do not amount to public regulatory authority over betting operators |
Source: NFL and Genius Sports announcement, 2025, extending the partnership through the 2029 NFL season; earlier 2021 and 2023 official announcements provide historical product context.
The NFL describes Genius as an exclusive distributor of official real-time play-by-play statistics, proprietary NGS information and the league's betting data feed to relevant media companies and sports betting operators globally. The same 2025 release says Genius remains the sole international supplier of official low-latency watch-and-bet games to sportsbooks and represents particular advertising inventory through FANHub. The word ‘international’ in the watch-and-bet provision is material: it would be inaccurate to convert it into an unqualified worldwide video monopoly.
BetVision illustrates how official data can accompany authorised interactive viewing. Its existence does not establish that every sportsbook, territory or device has access to every game.
The NFL relationship has a separate ownership dimension: the league also has securities-related arrangements with Genius. Those are not data-licensing rights. They concern the company's capital structure and belong in the companion analysis of Genius Sports people and ownership. A partnership with the NFL does not imply that the NFL owns or controls Genius's customer sportsbooks.
Football DataCo: Premier League, EFL and SPFL
For a British reader, the Genius Sports Football DataCo partnership is the clearest example of how national sporting rights become international betting infrastructure. Football DataCo (DataCo) commercialises official match-related data on behalf of professional football competitions. It is the relevant rights-side counterparty; Genius is the contracted collection and distribution partner, not the owner of the Premier League, English Football League or Scottish Professional Football League.
On 5 August 2024, Genius announced an extension covering the 2025/26, 2026/27, 2027/28 and 2028/29 seasons. The announcement states that Genius would continue as the sole official live betting-data distributor for the Premier League, EFL and SPFL to global sportsbook customers. It also added exclusive official Player Market Data distribution from the start of 2025/26.
| Element | What the August 2024 announcement established |
|---|---|
| Counterparty | Football DataCo, the official data-rights commercialisation organisation for relevant English and Scottish football |
| Competitions | Premier League, EFL and SPFL within the announced official-data scope |
| New agreement term | Seasons 2025/26 to 2028/29, described as running through 2029 |
| Core product | Collection, licensing and distribution of low-latency official live betting data to sportsbooks |
| Additional product | Official Player Market Data for specified player-statistics betting propositions |
| Scale described at announcement | Official data from over 4,000 fixtures per season, historically distributed to hundreds of licensed sportsbooks |
| Related but distinct technology | Computer-vision tracking work with Premier League and EFL teams, plus Data Zone and other media experiences |
Source: Genius Sports and Football DataCo, ‘Extend Exclusive Official Data Partnership Through 2029’, 5 August 2024. The fixture figure and customer references describe the issuer's announced service scale, not a guaranteed annual volume for every downstream client.
Player Market Data can include statistics such as shots on target, assists and pass completions, relevant to pre-match and in-play player propositions. The partnership therefore extends beyond a simple score feed. It is still incorrect to assume that Genius controls every image, broadcast, player-data field or archive of UK football. The release separately identifies tracking technology supplied to clubs and data-driven broadcast services, each with its own function.
The right to distribute data globally is not permission for every receiving sportsbook to offer every betting market in Britain. Operator authorisation remains separate.
Who supplies whom: leagues, Genius and operators
Rights originate with sports organisations or appointed agents. Genius processes and distributes services; sportsbooks and media customers incorporate them into their own products.
- League or appointed rights holder→Specified data, video or technology agreementGenius Sports: B2B supplier
- Genius Sports: B2B supplier→Licensed feed, service or integrationSportsbook or media customer
- Sportsbook or media customer→Consumer-facing product, subject to local rulesAudience or betting customer
Conceptual distribution chain. The arrows indicate contractual service relationships, not corporate ownership.
The company's official disclosures name major sportsbooks including DraftKings, FanDuel and bet365 among its commercial customers or partners. These names establish a business relationship only within the particular announced context. For example, an NFL data arrangement involving DraftKings is not proof that Genius owns DraftKings, that every DraftKings product uses Genius data, or that Genius determines which bets DraftKings may accept. Likewise, FanDuel or bet365 should not be treated as subsidiaries merely because they appear on a Genius customer list.
Historical Betgenius references need entity-specific checks; see current brands and subsidiaries.
An official-data licence is also not the same as an operator's commercial or regulatory licence. Genius may secure rights from a league and supply a compliant customer, while the customer separately obtains and maintains permissions for its sportsbook. Fees may combine fixed contractual minimums and usage-related charges; our explanation of how Genius Sports makes money covers that economic relationship without confusing it with legal title.
UK gambling licence: the exact legal entity
The phrase Genius Sports gambling licence requires a precise answer. According to the UK Gambling Commission public register, the licensed business is Genius Sports UK Limited, not every member of the listed Genius Sports group indiscriminately. Companies House identifies that legal entity under company number 04062777.
| Verified register field | Entry as checked on 8 November 2026 |

A remote gambling software licence allows the specified legal person to undertake regulated gambling-software activities within the relevant British framework. It does not, by itself, authorise Genius Sports UK Limited to act as a remote bookmaker, operate a consumer-facing casino or take deposits from betting customers. A sportsbook offering bets to British consumers requires the permissions applicable to that operator's own activities.
A licence belonging to an unrelated business cannot be attributed to Genius. US supplier permissions cannot substitute for UKGC authorisation; the regulator's register identifies the holder and activity.
One technology supplier, several regulatory boundaries
Software supply and customer-operated betting remain separate activities. Similar data used in a US state can face different regulatory requirements. There is no single worldwide gambling licence.
Global technology-reach figures do not establish universal approval for regulated products.
Other markets and prediction-market partnerships
Beyond the NFL and Football DataCo, Genius Sports has a separate agreement with Italy's Lega Serie A, announced on 4 August 2025, covering exclusive official data and low-latency betting video rights through the 2028/29 season. It includes Serie A, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana fixtures; low-latency sportsbook streaming is available outside Italy, supporting BetVision. These rights do not confer unrestricted ownership of Italian football broadcasts. Genius also works with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Liga MX and NCAA under separate arrangements, none of which confers ownership of those competitions.
Prediction markets further illustrate the distinction between counterparties and subsidiaries.
| Announcement | Parties and Genius's disclosed role | What cannot be inferred |
|---|---|---|
| 4 August 2026 | Genius and Polymarket announced a US-focused partnership covering selected official live streaming, data, league intellectual-property use and integrity services for eligible users of Polymarket's US platform. | Polymarket is not thereby a Genius subsidiary; the arrangement does not confer blanket approval in the UK or all US jurisdictions. |
| 5 August 2026 | Genius and Kalshi announced official football data, marketing, media and integrity services, including data used in the settlement of relevant sports event contracts. | A data-service contract is not a transfer of Kalshi's exchange operation or its regulatory obligations. |
| 17 September 2026 | Genius announced Prediction.com, launched through its acquired Legend business to help users discover and compare prediction-market prices, probabilities and event contracts across venues. | A comparison and discovery platform is not automatically the same legal or operational activity as operating the underlying exchange. |
Sources: dated official Genius Sports announcements, 4 and 5 August and 17 September 2026. Service descriptions reflect announced scope, not an independent certification of platform-by-platform regulatory eligibility.
In June 2026, Liga MX/Polymarket announced US sponsorship supported by Genius data; an AFA/Kalshi arrangement concerned the 2026 World Cup. Sponsorship, data, media and betting software are different services.
Neither platform's international presence establishes UK permission. Genius's disclosures acknowledge prediction-market regulatory uncertainty.
What the agreements do not establish
The evidence supports an international network, with clear limits:
- League partner does not mean league owner. Genius has specified official data and service rights from NFL, Football DataCo and others; sporting organisations retain their own rights beyond the agreements.
- Exclusive data is not every broadcast right. An NFL watch-and-bet distribution clause cannot be expanded into ownership of all NFL television content or unrestricted streaming in every country.
- Worldwide distribution is not universal local permission. A supplier may offer data globally while individual operators remain subject to local rules.
- Software licensee is not betting operator. UKGC account 50307 concerns Genius Sports UK Limited's remote gambling software activity, not a blanket consumer-betting licence.
- Commercial customer is not subsidiary. The relationships with sportsbooks and prediction-market platforms do not establish common ownership or management control.
- Announcement is not full rollout. A public agreement does not prove implementation in every market.
In our view, Genius's strength lies in connecting sporting rights with commercial uses. Yet each use depends on its contract, territory, product and regulatory position. Those layers must be assessed separately.
The financial implications of rights payments belong in Genius Sports financial performance; the possible cost of renewal and legal change is assessed in rights-renewal and regulatory risks.
